St. Mary’s Academy offers a competitive GIAA (Georgia Independent Athletic Assoc.) Class AAA, District 6 athletic program that plays a vital role in supporting the school’s mission. Our athletic department cultivates an environment that emphasizes hard work, servant leadership, and integrity while maintaining a Christ-centered mindset in a safe and supportive environment for all. St. Mary’s Academy’s pride is rooted in athletic teams that are competitive and inclusive. Our coaches and students boast numerous state/region championships.
OUR MISSION
Our Athletic Department’s mission is for student-athletes to grow in their academic and spiritual life, becoming positive role models in all of their future endeavors by providing numerous opportunities for all students with any skill level to participate in sports. The lessons learned from participation in athletics are vast and play a major role in the development of our students.
OUR GOAL
St. Mary’s Academy Athletic Department’s goal is for each student to be provided with opportunities to participate and succeed in sports. Our belief is that life lessons and values such as discipline, teamwork, commitment, and hard work can be learned through athletics.
FACILITIES
Bill Schmitz
Athletic Director, Bill Schmitz, joined the faculty in 2003. Additionally, he is the head volleyball coach and teaches Physical Education and Team Sports classes. He has held many positions at St. Mary’s Academy, including Head Varsity Volleyball Coach, Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, Head Football Coach, Asst. Boys Basketball Coach, and JV Basketball Coach. As head volleyball coach, Coach Schmitz led the program to one Region Runner-Up title, an Elite Eight appearance, 3 Sweet Sixteen Appearances and 9 State Tournament appearances. In 2016 he lead his team to a Region Championship with an undefeated region record. Coach Schmitz is a graduate of St. Pius X High School and Belmont Abbey College where he recived his B.A. in ???. Bill and his wife, Holly Lee live in Senoia, Georgia and have four children that are graduates of Our Lady of Mercy High School: Olivia ’12, Mary Katherine ’13, Colin ’20 and Brennan ’21.
Certified Athletic Trainers are allied healthcare professionals responsible for the prevention, management, and care of injuries at all levels of physical activity. They serve as a liaison between the athlete and physician as well as the athlete and coach. The athletic trainer at St. Mary’s Academy is responsible for covering all sporting events on campus as well as away games for varsity football and other selected events.
Student-athletes receive treatments using ultrasound machines, electric stimulation, hydrocollator moist heat packs, ice massage, and ice packs in addition to rehab stretching and exercises to return them to full activity in a safe and efficient manner.
